The man who invented the Jaipur foot has passed away in India today, at the age of 80.
Dr Pramod Karan Sethi was an orthopaedic surgeon who invented the artificial limb ‘Jaipur foot’. The invention helped hundreds of thousands of people to lead a normal life.
The invention was a low cost artifical limb, and was light and easier for the body to adapt. Dr Sethi invented it back in 1969. It was named after Jaipur, a city in Rajasthan where it was invented/designed.
The invention helped a lot of people, and his name was entered in Guinness book for the record number of people using Jaipur foot. Dr Sethi got the Padmashree award and the Ramon Magsaysay award for community leadership, for inventing the Jaipur foot.
Actress and dancer Ms Sudha Chandra was one of the celebrities who used the ‘Jaipur foot’. She lost her leg, and started using Jaipur foot, and continued to practise dancing. She acted in a movie, involving a dance sequence,using the Jaipur foot.
The International Red Cross Committee used and is still using his invention extensively at many war-ridden regions including Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East to help soldiers and civilians who lost their limbs.
